Photo taken on April 20 shows the road in Medog, Nyingchi Prefecture, southeastern Tibet, is under construction. Preliminary work has been completed for the project to build a highway leading to China's last roadless county of Medog, Tibet, according to Tibet's Department of Communication.(Xinhua Photo)
Situated on the border between Tibet and India and nestled in snow-capped mountains, Medog is inaccessible via road as it is blocked by the Himalaya and Gangri Gabu mountains. There are only mountain paths connecting villages and towns in the county. Local residents have to rely on horses and mules for transportation.
Construction of the 117-km highway, which begun in April at a cost of 950 million yuan (138.6 million U.S. dollars), will be finished within three years.
