  Chengdu Art Performances

Sichuan Opera
As a local opera popular in Sichuan, Yunnan and Guizhou Provinces, Sichuan opera is an important part of Chengdu culture. It began in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) as a combination of five operatic tunes introduced from other regions. Retaining the Sichuan dialect, the role of Chou (Clown) covers a comparatively large part of the performance; Sichuan opera often presents a charming witty atmosphere. Its varied performances, such as Bianlian (Changing faces), Gundeng (Rolling lamps) and Tuhuo (Spitting fire) are very popular; Bianlian (Changing faces) is famous even overseas for its mysterious techniques.

Changing Faces & Spitting Fire are derived from Old West Shu Country and well known all over the world. Changing faces is a performance art technique of high-speed changing of face masks. Instead of using painted on face makeup, Sichuan opera performers change their 'makeup' suddenly on the stage. Well, it's not really makeup, it's masks. They change their masks so quickly that the audience barely notices it...Spit fire is pretty obvious. The performers spit fire. There's no other way to describe it. They don't eat fire like American carnival acts, they spit it like dragons. It's startling even when you know it's coming. In the picture I took, it looks like the performer's head is on fire and you can't see his head for the flames

Stick-puppet Puppet show
is rooted from the Han Dynasty(202BC-204DC). It is a way of performing, which the puppet and performer are all on the stage. Wood-head Show in Sichuan Province and Pleading Puppet Show are most famous, and they were used as to fete the ancestors at ancient times, when they had the style of sobriety and solemn. In the Song Dynasty (960-1279) they became to be puppet show, and spreaded in the folk to be a cheerful folk acrobatics. Stick-puppet Show is specialized at both its exquisite model and difficult performing skills. Nowadays, there are few people who can perform the show.

Rolling lamps
is a classic clown play of Sichuan Opera. It involves doing complex physical comedy while balancing a flaming bowl on one's head. It is about husband and wife arguing over the husband's gambling. The wife kept giving the husband progressively weirder and more dangerous stunts to perform. But the rolling light guy could move his body in a few thousand ways and yet not knock that flaming bowl off his head. He looked like he was made of rubber.

The famous Sichuan Opera can be seen in the Sichuan Opera Theater, at No. 20, Zhuangyuan Street and also in Shunxing Old Tea House, third floor of Chengdu International Exhibition Center, No. 258, Shawan Road; in Shufeng Square inside People's Park, and in Shufeng Yayun Garden in the Culture Park. It usually starts at 20:00.

Chengdu Jinsha musical
In the western suburbs of Chengdu, the Jinsha ruins were first discovered when workers began excavating the jinsha cottage area to make way for new housing. The precious relics unearthed at the site and numbering as many as 1,000 pieces, including: more than 30 pieces of gold, 400 pieces of jade and bronze, 170 pieces of stone, 40 pieces of ivory, weighed in at over 1 ton. Most of the artifacts are from the Shang Dynasty and earlier Western Zhou Dynasty, with some from the Spring and Autumn Period. Archeological exploration of the site continues with the hope of discovering more rare treasures of the past.

The discovery of the ruins of Jinsha village brought widespread attention to the ancient Shu Kingdom. Experts agree that, the Jinsha Ruins are the most significant archaeological discovery after the San Xing Dui discovery in Guanghan, Sichuan Province. The excavation of the Jinsha Ruins is of extremely important significance for the study of Ancient-Shu history and culture and it will rewrite the history of Chengdu, Sichuan and what we know of the ancient Shu.

The Jinsha musical portrays the story of jin and sha; a love story that ebbs and flows over 3,000 years. Jinsha Musical, many people mention it together with some classics, such as Cat, West Side Story, Miss Saigon, The Sound of Music in the same breath. The musical opera 'Jinsha' is really a great success, in which at least half of its theme song could leave a deep impression in the audience's hearts. The humorous Song of Egg which describes the beginning of chaos in the opening act; the luxurious Flower Space which describes the holy lotus world: the moving and tragic Battlefield which reveals the warring state of ancient Shu: the vivid Song of Working that full of nature of life: the meaningful Forgetting outpouring the deep affection; the main rhythm I Will Find What Someday, At That Time which get through the entire opera, are all with clear styles and full of inspiration. The success comes from the strong shocking felt by the music maker. Tears came out of his eyes for several times when he was facing the Jinsha Site.

Jinsha musical usually starts at 20:00.
